The Blues legend was in attendance as Chelsea U23 beat Feyenoord U23 at Aldershot. Tom Cann reports.
Former Chelsea legend Michael Essien was at the EBB Stadium on Tuesday night as he saw Chelsea U23 play Feyenoord U23 in the first match of the Premier League International Cup.
Feyenoord got the first goal of the game in the 12th minute, after a fantastic strike from 21-year-old Turkey U21 international Bilal Basaoikoglu, who floated the ball over the Chelsea keeper Bradley Collins and into the back of the net.
Chelsea’s best chance came in the 35th minute, as Quintero found himself through on goal, one on one with the keeper, but the keeper came out on top, and managed to tip the ball behind for a corner.
In the 60th minute, Feyenoord goal scorer Basaoikoglu was sent off, picking up a second yellow for a challenge on Quintero, leaving Feyenoord to play the rest of the game with 10 men.
Chelsea had a good opportunity when Quintero again, got into a dangerous situation and crossed the ball low into the box, but the sliding Ike Ugbo couldn’t put a foot on it.
Chelsea’s pressure paid off in the 83rd minute, as a low driven free kick from Dasilva ended up at the feet of substitute Dujon Sterling, who reeled away in celebration after a fine finish.
Just minutes later, Chelsea scored again, this time Ugbo popped up with a shot that went low through the arms of Hahn, and into the back of the net. Chelsea’s extra man advantage had paid off, and in a matter of minutes, Chelsea went from being 1-0 down, to leading 2-1.
The match finished 2-1 to the Blues, who go into their next game against Dinamo Zagreb, on the back of a win in the International Cup.
