Pilgrims Bay Noses It

Sandown racegoers were treated to a thrilling Novice Chase, as Tom Lunn reports.

The 13.50 Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase at Sandown Park on Friday saw a photo finish win for Noel Fehily on board Pilgrims Bay. Antartica De Thaix who came second, raced strong near the finish but just failed to close the gap on Pilgrims Bay winning by a nose.

A stewards’ enquiry was called to take another look on the run in, as Noel Fehily’s horse seemed to veer left and impede the racing line of Antartica De Thaix on the approach to the finish, but the result of the race remained.

Star Trouper unseated Adam Wedge after a blunder from the jump. Get Involved was hampered by the loose horse and in turn unseated his jockey too. The pair were increasingly detached from the main group and struggled to keep the pace as the race continued.

The opening day of The Tingle Creek Festival saw a few jockey changes too as Sam Twiston-Davies came in to race at Sandown in the lead up to his racing day at Exeter the day after.
